AGTC Genomics is proud to announce its participation in a groundbreaking research project that has been awarded RM3.5 million in funding under the TeD PEMACU 2.0 Programme by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).
The project represents a significant national investment in healthcare innovation and will focus on the development and clinical validation of an integrated diagnostic platform for rapid and accurate infectious disease detection, with the goal of improving diagnostic efficiency, accelerating clinical decision-making, and enhancing patient outcomes.
The research initiative is led by Professor Dr James Koh Kwee Choy, Deputy Dean for Clinical Sciences, Development & Community Engagement and Consultant Physician and Infectious Disease Specialist at IMU University, together with a multidisciplinary team of researchers from IMU University and Universiti Malaya. AGTC Genomics serves as the industry partner, contributing its expertise in genomics, next-generation sequencing (NGS), bioinformatics, molecular diagnostics, and technology translation.
The project aims to address critical challenges in infectious disease diagnosis, where delays in pathogen identification can impact treatment decisions and patient outcomes. By integrating advanced genomic technologies, artificial intelligence, and innovative diagnostic workflows, the team seeks to develop a platform capable of delivering faster, more comprehensive, and clinically actionable results.
The research team comprises:
Professor Dr James Koh Kwee Choy (IMU University)
Professor Ts Dr Chun-Wai Mai (IMU University)
Dr Chin King Looi (IMU University)
Professor Dr Mohd Shahnaz Hasan (Universiti Malaya)
Associate Professor Dr Helmi Sulaiman (Universiti Malaya)
Dr Soo Tein Ngoi (Universiti Malaya)
According to Professor Dr Leong Chee-Onn, Founder and CEO of AGTC Genomics, the award highlights the growing importance of strategic collaboration between academia, industry, and government in developing next-generation healthcare solutions.
This RM3.5 million award demonstrates the confidence placed in Malaysian researchers and industry partners to develop innovative solutions that address real-world healthcare challenges. Infectious diseases remain a major burden on healthcare systems worldwide, and advances in genomics and molecular diagnostics provide unprecedented opportunities to transform how these diseases are detected and managed. AGTC Genomics is honored to be part of this important national initiative and looks forward to translating research into technologies that can directly benefit patients and healthcare providers.
The project further strengthens Malaysia's position in precision medicine, molecular diagnostics, and healthcare innovation while supporting the nation's efforts to build sustainable local capabilities in advanced biotechnology and genomic medicine.
