AGTC Genomics Contributes to Malaysia’s National Digital Healthcare Mission

Professor Dr Chee-Onn Leong FASc contributes scientific and industry perspectives towards building an inclusive, preventive and future-ready healthcare ecosystem for Malaysia


KUALA LUMPUR, 31 July 2026 — AGTC Genomics recently participated in the Stakeholder Engagement Workshop on the Mission-Oriented Initiative for Digital Healthcare, organised by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Held on 21 July 2026, the engagement brought together stakeholders from government, healthcare, academia and industry to identify national priorities for Malaysia’s digital healthcare transformation.


Professor Dr Chee-Onn Leong FASc, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of AGTC Genomics, contributed to the engagement as an elected committee member, providing perspectives on how digital healthcare and precision medicine can be developed as frontier technologies to address healthcare inequity and disparities.


A central theme of the discussion was that digital transformation must extend beyond simply converting existing healthcare processes into digital formats. Instead, technology should improve access to early detection, preventive care, accurate diagnosis and personalised health management—particularly for communities that may face geographical, financial or infrastructural barriers to healthcare.


“The success of digital healthcare should not be measured only by the sophistication of its technology, but by whether it enables more people to receive earlier, more accurate and more appropriate care,” said Professor Leong. “Digital health and precision medicine must work together to reduce healthcare disparities and move the system from late intervention towards prevention, early detection and proactive health management.”

Professor Leong highlighted the potential integration of genomics, clinical information, artificial intelligence, digital health platforms and real-world health data to support more informed healthcare decisions. These technologies could enable healthcare providers to identify disease risks earlier, select more appropriate interventions and continuously monitor health outcomes across different stages of life.


However, the adoption of these technologies must be supported by strong data governance, interoperability, cybersecurity, patient consent, clinical validation and ethical safeguards. Affordability and accessibility must also remain central to national implementation so that technological advancement does not widen the existing digital and healthcare divide.


The stakeholder engagement examined priorities across healthcare delivery and patient outcomes, medical ethics and regulation, investment and market opportunities, as well as digital infrastructure, data governance and policy. These perspectives are expected to contribute towards actionable strategies for strengthening Malaysia’s digital healthcare ecosystem.


Professor Leong also emphasised the importance of developing locally relevant health technologies, evidence and datasets that reflect Malaysia’s diverse population. Greater collaboration among government agencies, healthcare institutions, universities, technology developers and industry will be essential to translate scientific innovation into solutions that can be implemented sustainably across the national healthcare system.
