Strengthening Malaysia’s Translational Research Ecosystem Through Strategic Stakeholder Engagement

SETIA ALAM, 30 July 2026 — AGTC Genomics was honoured to participate in the Translational Research Stakeholder Engagement Workshop, organised by the National Institutes of Health Malaysia (NIH) and the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) at NIH Setia Alam.
The workshop brought together representatives from academia, healthcare, biotechnology, investment and entrepreneurship to discuss how promising research discoveries can be translated into practical healthcare solutions, commercially sustainable innovations and meaningful benefits for patients.
AGTC Genomics was represented by its Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Dr. Leong Chee Onn, who joined an accomplished panel comprising:

The panel provided perspectives across the entire translational research journey—from scientific discovery and clinical validation to research investment, entrepreneurship, intellectual property development, commercialisation and market expansion.
Discussions highlighted that successful translational research requires more than strong scientific findings. Early engagement among researchers, clinicians, industry partners, investors, entrepreneurs and regulators is essential to ensure that innovations are designed around real healthcare needs and supported by viable implementation and commercialisation strategies.
Professor Dr. Leong shared perspectives from AGTC Genomics’ experience in translating genomic research into clinically relevant precision medicine solutions. The discussion also emphasised the importance of developing local capabilities, supporting technology-driven companies and creating clearer pathways for Malaysian innovations to enter regional and international markets.
Malaysia possesses a strong pool of researchers, healthcare professionals and technology entrepreneurs. Greater coordination across the research and commercial ecosystem can help promising discoveries progress beyond academic publications and laboratories into solutions that improve clinical care, strengthen the biotechnology industry and contribute to economic development.
