AGTC Genomics Strengthens Malaysia’s Preventive and Precision-Health Ecosystem Through Genomics, Nutrition and Microbiome Education

AGTC Genomics is strengthening its commitment to building Malaysia’s preventive and precision-health ecosystem through a series of Continuing Medical Education (CME), professional training and awareness programmes with leading healthcare centres, focusing on the emerging roles of preventive medicine, precision nutrition, nutrigenomics, nutriepigenomics and gut microbiome science.

As part of this ongoing CME series, Ms Samantha Wong, Senior Consultant Dietitian at AGTC Genomics, recently led a professional training and awareness session highlighting how advances in genomics and molecular health sciences are transforming conventional nutrition and disease prevention towards a more personalised, data-driven and evidence-informed approach.

The programme forms part of AGTC Genomics’ broader effort to work alongside hospitals, healthcare institutions, clinicians and allied health professionals to build greater awareness and professional capabilities in precision preventive medicine.

With non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and cancer continuing to place a significant burden on healthcare systems, greater emphasis is increasingly being placed on identifying health risks earlier and intervening before disease progresses.

Rather than focusing primarily on treating established disease, preventive and precision medicine seek to understand an individual’s underlying biological risks, lifestyle factors and environmental influences to support earlier and more targeted health interventions.

Moving Beyond One-Size-Fits-All Nutrition

During the CME session, Ms Wong highlighted nutrigenomics, the study of how genetic differences can influence an individual’s response to nutrients, food and dietary patterns.

Individuals may metabolise nutrients differently or respond differently to similar diets because of variations in their genetic makeup. Understanding these differences can help healthcare professionals develop more personalised nutritional strategies rather than relying solely on general population recommendations.

The training also explored nutriepigenomics, an emerging field examining how nutrients, dietary patterns and lifestyle factors may influence the regulation and expression of genes through epigenetic mechanisms.

While an individual’s underlying DNA sequence remains largely unchanged, factors such as nutrition, physical activity, environment and lifestyle can influence biological processes that regulate how genes function.

Together, nutrigenomics and nutriepigenomics provide an important scientific foundation for understanding the interaction between genes, nutrition, lifestyle and health.

The Gut Microbiome as a New Dimension of Preventive Health

Another major focus of the CME programme was the gut microbiome, the complex ecosystem of microorganisms within the gastrointestinal system.

Growing scientific understanding of the microbiome has highlighted its relationship with digestion, nutrient metabolism, immune function and metabolic health. Differences in microbiome composition may therefore provide additional biological insights when interpreted together with clinical, nutritional and genomic information.

“Precision nutrition is about understanding why different individuals may respond differently to the same food, nutrients or lifestyle intervention. By integrating nutritional assessment with genomic, epigenomic and microbiome insights, healthcare professionals can develop a more personalised and evidence-informed approach to preventive health,” said Ms Samantha Wong, Senior Consultant Dietitian, AGTC Genomics.

She also emphasised that genomic and microbiome information should complement, rather than replace, clinical and professional nutritional assessment. The value lies in combining these emerging technologies with medical history, dietary assessment, lifestyle factors and professional interpretation to translate complex biological information into meaningful and actionable health strategies.

Building Healthcare Professional Capabilities Through CME

AGTC Genomics views continuous professional education as a critical component in accelerating the responsible adoption of precision medicine.

Through its ongoing series of CME programmes and educational engagements with leading healthcare centres, the company aims to create stronger links between advanced molecular science and frontline healthcare practice.

These initiatives provide healthcare professionals with greater exposure to emerging fields such as genomics, epigenomics, microbiome science and precision nutrition, while creating opportunities for multidisciplinary discussion on how these technologies can be responsibly integrated into preventive healthcare.

The objective is not simply to introduce new testing technologies, but to strengthen the knowledge and capabilities required to interpret and apply increasingly complex health information in meaningful clinical and preventive settings.

From Disease Treatment to Disease Prevention

AGTC Genomics believes the next evolution of healthcare will increasingly focus on prediction, prevention and early detection, alongside the treatment of established diseases.

By working with healthcare centres and healthcare professionals through CME, professional education and awareness initiatives, AGTC Genomics aims to contribute towards a healthcare ecosystem where individuals can better understand their health risks and clinicians have access to more comprehensive information to guide personalised interventions.

The convergence of genomics, epigenomics, precision nutrition and gut microbiome science represents an important opportunity to move healthcare from a predominantly reactive model towards one that is increasingly proactive, preventive, personalised and data-driven.

Through continued investment in education, technology and clinical translation, AGTC Genomics is supporting the development of the knowledge, capabilities and ecosystem required to advance precision preventive healthcare in Malaysia and across the region.
