AGTC Genomics recently held a fruitful visit and strategic discussion with the BioNexus Partners Laboratories (BNP Labs) network, marking an important step toward strengthening Malaysia’s translational genomics ecosystem across healthcare, agriculture, biotechnology and environmental sustainability.

The engagement brought together shared priorities in advancing genome-based research from discovery to practical applications, with a strong focus on translating scientific innovation into real-world solutions that benefit industry, healthcare systems, communities and the environment.

The discussion highlighted the growing importance of translational genome research as a key driver of Malaysia’s bioeconomy. In healthcare, genomics is transforming precision medicine through early disease detection, precision oncology, rare disease diagnosis, pharmacogenomics and infectious disease surveillance. Beyond medicine, genomics is also becoming increasingly important in precision agriculture, where genome-based tools can support crop improvement, livestock health, food safety, soil microbiome analysis and plant disease monitoring. In environmental sustainability, genomic and metagenomic technologies can enable biodiversity monitoring, wastewater surveillance, microbial ecosystem profiling and evidence-based environmental management.

The BNP Labs network plays a significant role in connecting Malaysia’s research capabilities with industry needs. Through its members across universities, research institutions, government-linked organisations and private laboratories, the network provides access to technical expertise, specialised facilities, laboratory services, product development support, method validation, training, consultancy and collaborative research platforms. This national network is essential in accelerating research, development, commercialisation and innovation, particularly for biotechnology companies and researchers seeking to transform ideas into validated products and services.

AGTC Genomics believes that the strength of the BNP Labs network lies in its ability to bring together diverse expertise from academia, government, research agencies and industry. By enabling collaboration across disciplines, BNP Labs can help bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and market-ready solutions, supporting Malaysia’s ambition to become a regional leader in biotechnology, precision medicine and sustainable bio-based innovation.

As a local genomics technology company, AGTC Genomics is well positioned to contribute to this national agenda through its expertise in next-generation sequencing, molecular diagnostics, bioinformatics, clinical genomics, microbial genomics and multi-omics data analysis. The company’s capabilities can support BNP Labs members and industry partners in designing, validating and implementing genomics-based solutions for real-world challenges.

AGTC Genomics can contribute across several key areas, including clinical genomics for precision medicine, microbial and pathogen genomics for public health, agricultural genomics for food security, environmental genomics for sustainability, and bioinformatics pipelines that convert complex genomic data into actionable insights. By combining advanced sequencing platforms, analytical expertise and translational experience, AGTC Genomics aims to help researchers, clinicians, farmers, industries and policymakers make better data-driven decisions.

“Genomics is no longer limited to research laboratories. It is now a practical technology that can improve patient care, strengthen food security, support environmental monitoring and accelerate biotechnology innovation,” said Ms Toh Hiu Ching, Manager of the AGTC Advanced Genomics Laboratory at Bukit Jalil. “Our engagement with the BioNexus Partners Laboratories network reflects our commitment to working with Malaysia’s scientific and industry ecosystem to translate genome research into meaningful solutions for the country.”

The visit also reinforced the importance of collaboration, knowledge sharing and technology transfer between genomics companies and national research infrastructure. By working closely with BNP Labs members, AGTC Genomics hopes to support joint research projects, technical training, method development, pilot studies and commercialisation pathways that can bring Malaysian innovations to local and regional markets.

Through this engagement, AGTC Genomics reaffirms its commitment to advancing genomics as a strategic technology for Malaysia’s future, spanning precision medicine, precision agriculture, environmental sustainability and the broader bioeconomy.
