Potential partnership brings together UMMC’s clinical and academic excellence with AGTC Genomics’ advanced genomics capabilities to strengthen Malaysia’s leadership in precision and genomic medicine

AGTC Genomics and University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) are exploring strategic collaboration opportunities aimed at accelerating the development and adoption of precision medicine and genomic medicine in Malaysia.

The engagement brings together the complementary strengths of two leading Malaysian institutions. UMMC, one of the country’s foremost academic medical centres, has extensive expertise in clinical care, medical research, specialist medicine and healthcare professional development. AGTC Genomics, meanwhile, brings advanced capabilities in clinical genomics, next-generation sequencing, precision oncology, preventive genomics and multi-omics technologies.

By combining clinical expertise with cutting-edge genomic technologies, both institutions see significant potential to develop a stronger precision medicine ecosystem that can translate scientific discoveries into meaningful benefits for patients.

Precision medicine is rapidly transforming healthcare by enabling disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment to be tailored according to an individual’s genetic, molecular, clinical and lifestyle characteristics. Building national capabilities in this field will be increasingly important as countries seek to address growing healthcare challenges, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, rare diseases and other complex conditions.

AGTC Genomics is a BioNexus Status company recognised by Malaysia’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and has developed extensive capabilities across clinical genomics and precision medicine. From its base in Malaysia, the company has expanded its regional reach across Southeast Asia and the wider Asia-Pacific region, serving and developing opportunities in markets including Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Vietnam and Thailand, among others.

The potential engagement with UMMC represents an important opportunity to further strengthen Malaysia’s position as a regional hub for precision and genomic medicine.

“Malaysia has the scientific talent, clinical expertise and technological capabilities needed to become a leader in precision medicine,” said Professor Chee-Onn Leong, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of AGTC Genomics. “By bringing together the clinical and academic strengths of institutions such as UMMC with advanced genomic technologies and industry capabilities, we have an opportunity to build a truly integrated precision medicine ecosystem that can benefit patients in Malaysia while creating solutions with regional and global impact.”

There are considerable opportunities for capacity and capability building, including the development of specialised genomic testing capabilities, clinician and scientist training, translational research, genomic data analytics, precision oncology, preventive medicine and the establishment of integrated clinical-genomic pathways.

Such initiatives could also contribute towards building a larger pool of Malaysian expertise in bioinformatics, molecular diagnostics, medical genomics, genetic counselling and precision healthcare—critical areas required to support the future of data-driven and personalised medicine.

Beyond healthcare delivery, stronger cooperation between academia, healthcare institutions and the biotechnology industry can accelerate innovation, support the development of locally relevant genomic evidence and reduce dependence on overseas testing and expertise. The ability to generate and interpret genomic data within Malaysia is also important in ensuring that precision medicine solutions better reflect the genetic diversity and healthcare needs of Malaysian and Asian populations.

As precision and genomic medicine continue to reshape healthcare globally, partnerships that bridge clinical medicine, academia, technology and industry will be essential for Malaysia to remain competitive.

AGTC Genomics looks forward to continued discussions with UMMC and to exploring opportunities that can strengthen Malaysia’s precision medicine capabilities, develop the next generation of healthcare professionals and scientists, and ultimately translate advances in genomics into better prevention, earlier diagnosis and more personalised treatment for patients.
